The Trascau Fortress is located in the village of Coltesti and is known to exist since the end of the 13th century. It’s a medieval fortification built around 1296 by the Throczkay family. Over time the fortress was severely damaged. In 1514 the peasants led by Gheorghe Doja pillaged the citadel. In 1704, as the Throczkay noblemen refused to join the Habsburg Empire, the fortress was almost entirely destroyed by the Imperial Army.
Two towers and most of the lateral walls survived. It’s a beautiful attraction worth seeing.
The Szeklers Stone is a massive limestone formation that offers a few hours of hiking and a beautiful panorama of Coltesti and Rimetea villages.
We gather our gear and board our van in Cluj-Napoca at 9 am. It’s a one and a half hour drive to the city of Aiud. Aiud is the starting point of many of our tours in this area because of its vicinity to all of the beautiful sites in the Trascau region. We unload the bikes and take a short city tour. The Fortress of Aiud dates back to the 13th century and is one of the oldest in Transylvania. We’ll be leaving the small city behind and head towards the Trascau Fortress 20 kilometers away. We’ll pass through Cheile Valisoarei (Valisoara Gorges) a protected natural site. On our way to the fortress we can make a stop for some cheese tasting. There is a place where they produce it according to traditional recipes.
Around 1 pm we’ll be arriving at the fortress. We can have a picnic near the fortress or pedal on to the village of Rimetea to enjoy a well deserved traditional lunch. Rimetea is also worth visiting. It’s said that is one of the most beautiful villages of Transylvania. A little hike comes next onto the Szeklers Stone where we’ll take some time to admire the beautiful panorama. After finishing our hike we get on our bikes and ride back to Aiud.
The road to Aiud is slightly descending so it will benefit our somewhat tired bodies 🙂
After an optional meal in Aiud we’ll be heading back to Cluj-Napoca with our van.
